Will Friday’s rainfall be enough to bust the drought? (WTVA) – Will Friday’s rainfall be enough to bust the drought? The answer is no, unfortunately. Several counties will continue to be under burn bans. These include Benton, Grenada, Lafayette, Lee, and Marshall counties. The drought is continuing to worsen across many parts of Mississippi. Under the bans, burning anything outside that produces an ember is prohibited, with violators facing charges that can include a fine of up to $500. “Just be careful, just think,” said Tupelo Fire Chief Brad Robinson. ”Even just little things, throwing something out going down the road, could cause something to catch on fire and could cause a lot of damage.” “If you look outside and that grass is starting to brown up or is browning up,” said Mike Crabb with the Mississippi Forestry Commission. “If the humidity is low and if there is wind, that’s going to be the prime time to have a wildfire. Those are the three factors that matter the most in whether we are going to have a wildfire and how large it is going to be.” Grills, gas stoves, and heaters are okay to use. Caution should be used when doing so. Lee County’s burn ban will continue through Oct. 8. Copyright 2026 WTVA. All rights reserved.
