STARKVILLE, Miss. (WTVA ) – First responders and a fraternity worked together to host a 9/11 memorial.

On the Mississippi State University campus in Starkville, a stair climb memorial was held at the Davis Wade Stadium, honoring the courage of first responders who walked the 110 flights of stairs in the World Trade Center.

It was able to take place with the help of Lambda Chi Alpha.

Many of the firefighters did the climb in full gear.

They were not alone, as EMS, military members, police, students a members of the public were a part of the climb as well.

“These men were going up crowded stairwells with people running down the stairwells to get away from what they were running towards,” said training chief Brain Arnett. “They were dressed in 60 pounds of gear, carrying an additional 40 to 50 pounds of equipment and running up those stairs to what everyone else was running away from. So, to me, just to come out and do 110 stories is just to remember the sacrifice that these people made, and in some small way to try to honor that memory of being prepared, and when you’re called, ready to go.”

Almost 3,000 people were murdered in the attacks on 9/11, and of them, 343 were New York firefighters.
