Bush just days before the attack warning of the strength of Osama bin Laden\u2019s terrorist organization Credit: Reuters\n\nThousands of lives were lost in terrorist attacks on the US on September 11, 2001, including in New York City when the Twin Towers were struck Credit: Getty Images\n\nA document from 1998 warned of an explosive-packed airplane that could be flown into a US city Credit: CIA\n\n\nThe CIA released 71 documents on Friday, 69 of which were new, on the 25th anniversary of the attacks.\n\n\n\nThe records do not change the overall understanding of how the US government failed to prevent 9/11, but give insight into a series of warnings given to presidents between 1998 and 2001.\n\n\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSign up for The US Sun newsletter\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThank you!\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\n\n\nOn September 10, 1998, three years and one day before the day that changed the world forever, one memo in the President\u2019s Daily Brief warned, \u201c[sic] Bin Ladin late last month said his preferred option is to strike the US on its own soil in Washington.\n\n\n\n\u201cThe same group responsible for the bombings in Africa may fly an explosive-packed airplane into a US city.\u201d\n\n\n\nIt could not be determined whether then-President Bill Clinton read the document or was briefed on the content.\n\n\n\nThe 9/11 Commission\u2019s 2004 study into the attacks described the 1998 memo as a threat report, according to the Wall Street Journal.\n\n\n\nThe study did not reveal that it was written as part of an intelligence briefing for the president.\n\n\n\nThe CIA said this was the largest release of declassified documents related to 9/11.\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMost read in The US Sun\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cThe products trace the story of CIA analysts\u2019 evolving understanding of al-Qa\u2019ida and efforts to highlight and warn of Usama Bin Ladin\u2019s attack plotting despite sparse, vague, and imperfect information,\u201d the agency said.\n\n\n\nCounterterrorism had not been a priority in the US prior to 9/11, and information about bin Laden came in spotty and unreliable updates, with many memos citing \u201chighly questionable sources.\u201d\n\n\n\nOsama bin Laden was the founder of the terrorist organization al Qaeda, which was behind the 2001 attacks and a series of other attacks in multiple countries that killed thousands of people.\n\n\n\nHe was shot in the head during a dramatic raid by US Special Forces on May 2, 2011, in Operation Geronimo, after months of CIA surveillance found him holed up in a remote compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.\n\n\n\nIn February 1993, Ramzi Yousef, who trained in one of bin Laden\u2019s camps, carried out the first major Middle Eastern terrorist attack on the US by planting a truck bomb under the World Trade Center.\n\n\n\nSix people were killed and over a thousand were left injured, but the towers still stood.\n\n\n\nPresidents were warned in the years after the attack of more potential threats, including in a document from August 1998 titled \u201cBin Ladin Terrorist Network Still a Threat.\u201d\n\n\n\n\u201cHours before the US missile strikes, Bin Ladin was looking at options for further attacks against the US as well as the UK,\u201d the memo said, with some sections redacted.\n\n\nA memo from August 28, 2001, warned bin Laden\u2019s organization posed a continuing threat to US interests Credit: CIA\n\nAnother heavily redacted document discussed bin Laden\u2019s targets and a plan for bringing war to America Credit: CIA\n\n\n\u201cBin Ladin did not indicate precise targets or timing.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe memo also warned that a US Embassy in a redacted country was \u201ca possible target,\u201d and said a man had been authorized by bin Laden to \u201cexplore attacks in the US.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe last memo \u2013 released in this batch of documents \u2013 before 9/11 was issued on August 28, 2001, in a daily briefing for then-President George W.
