                    "Elon Musk responded to the debut of Alex Gibney\u2019s four-hour documentary \u201cMusk,\u201d which had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this week, by slamming it as a \u201chit piece\u201d and threatening legal action over claims that he used his Starlink satellites to influence the 2024 presidential election.\n\n\n\nIn the letter, addressed to Jigsaw Productions and dated Sept. 3, Spiro says they tried to contact the team \u201cmultiple times\u201d and \u201crequested an opportunity to\u00a0present the facts in the normal fact-checking process that is the hallmark of ethical journalism.\u00a0 You have refused to engage.\u201d\t\n\t\n\n\n\nThe letter continues: \u201cWhile we are ardent supporters of the First Amendment, and respect the reporting process, it has\u00a0become abundantly clear that the motivations behind this piece are not the pursuit of truth, but\u00a0something far different. This project did not begin as an inquiry. It began with a conclusion.\u201d\t\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cYou are on notice, before release, that the insinuation is false, that the material refuting it is public, and that you chose not to be told the rest,\u201d Spiro wrote.\n\n\n\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cStarlink was not connected to vote tabulation. Election officials in multiple states, independent cybersecurity researchers, and fact-checkers publicly refuted the Starlink vote-rigging claim in November 2024, and nothing since has revived it,\u201d Spiro said in the letter, which was first reported by THR. \u201cDefamation does not require an express accusation.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe letter alleges that the film hinges on \u201cthe accounts of witnesses with acknowledged personal grievances against Mr. Musk\u201d and that \u201cnothing\u00a0in the available reporting indicates that their consequential claims were independently\u00a0 corroborated,\u201d adding that \u201cthe people in a position to contradict them were neither unknown nor\u00a0unavailable. They came to you and asked to be heard, and you refused them, as you refused us.\u00a0That is not a gap in the reporting. It is a conscious decision to disregard the truth.\u201d\n\n\n\nThe letter says litigation is \u201creasonably anticipated.\u201d\t\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cWe therefore have no choice but to put you on formal legal notice regarding your upcoming\u00a0\u2018piece\u2019 and to reserve all rights. That notice runs to everyone who participates in publishing this\u00a0film \u2014 Mr. Gibney, Jigsaw, HBO, Bleecker Street, Universal, and every other financier,\u00a0 producer, and distributor \u2014 as of today. Any decision to release, republish, or promote this\u00a0material with knowledge of the facts set out above will be assessed accordingly.\u201d\t\n\t\n\n\n\nJigsaw Productions issued a statement in response to the letter:\n\n\n\n\u201cAlex Gibney\u2019s films are consistently recognized for their in-depth, fact-driven explorations of influential figures and corporations, coupled with his bold and engaging directorial style. This approach has garnered him international praise, an Academy Award among other accolades, and a reputation that The Times of London recently lauded as the \u201cgold standard for fearless journalistic integrity.\u201d The right to engage in open debate and fact-based examinations of powerful public figures is protected by the first amendment \u2013 something that should be recognized and defended by all Americans, including the associates of Elon Musk, who has proclaimed himself to be a \u2018free speech absolutist.\u2019\u201d\n\n\n\nMusk himself took to X over the last several days to slam the movie himself.\n\n\n\n\u201cGibney deliberately set out to make a hit piece and lacks any integrity whatsoever,\u201d Musk said on X.\t\n\t\n\n\n\nIn another reply on the social media platform, he again said the documentary filmmaker has \u201czero integrity\u201d and added \u201chis movies are boring af.\u201d\t\n\t\n\n\n\nThe documentary \u201cMusk\u201d is due to be released by Bleecker Street in the U.S. on Oct. 16."
