[Stefanos Rapanis – Anadolu Agency]             US military and intelligence officials are discussing whether to reduce or restructure the country’s presence in the Middle East after Iranian missile and drone attacks exposed vulnerabilities at American facilities across the region, according to a  CNN  report.  CNN  reported that repeated Iranian strikes had targeted a number of US military installations in the Middle East, causing significant damage and killing 18 US service members.  The attacks have prompted discussions within the US government about whether some military and intelligence operations could be conducted without relying as heavily on permanent facilities in the region, according to officials cited by the network.  CNN  reported that US facilities in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait sustained substantial damage during Iranian attacks.  The network also cited US officials as saying that a CIA facility in Riyadh had been destroyed. Details concerning the facility and the extent of the reported damage were not independently confirmed in the information provided. US analysts cited by  CNN   reportedly assess that Iran’s current leadership remains capable of sustaining the confrontation for an extended period, while the conflict has demonstrated the exposure of fixed US installations in the Gulf to missile and drone attacks.  The United States significantly expanded its network of military and intelligence facilities in the broader Middle East following the 11 th September 2001 attacks, supporting operations in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Libya.  US-Iran tensions also escalated sharply after a US drone strike killed Iranian Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in January 2020.
