                    "SEOUL, Sept 7 (Reuters)\u00a0\u2013\u00a0North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the country\u2019s newest destroyer would be part of a nuclear response system and could deliver \u201cannihilating retaliatory strikes,\u201d state media KCNA reported on Monday, although it did not say whether the vessel would carry nuclear weapons.\n\n\n\nNorth Korea has accelerated efforts to modernize its\u00a0navy\u00a0as Kim pursues a broader expansion of the country\u2019s nuclear-capable forces.\n\n\n\nAt a commissioning ceremony in the eastern\u00a0port\u00a0city of Wonsan on Sunday, Kim said the new ship\u2019s deployment to the sea east of the Korean Peninsula sent a clear signal to North Korea\u2019s adversaries.\n\n\n\n\u201cThe time has come for us to exercise our sovereignty at sea and under water,\u201d Kim said, according to KCNA.\u00a0\n\n\n\nThe 5,000-ton-class destroyer, the \u201cKang Kon,\u201d is the second warship of its class to enter service, following the commissioning of the \u201cChoe Hyon\u201d destroyer on North Korea\u2019s west coast about\u00a0three months earlier, KCNA cited Kim as saying.\n\n\n\nKim said North Korea\u2019s naval nuclear armaments were advancing, and the country would continue to expand what he called its most powerful strategic assets in key waters to protect its maritime sovereignty and regional security.\u00a0\n\n\n\nHe added that the Kang Kon would form part of North Korea\u2019s state nuclear response system.\n\n\n\nKCNA did not specify what weapons systems might be deployed on the Kang Kon, but said is has the same weapons systems as the Choe Hyon.
