                    "While most 4-year-olds were speaking to Elmo, Lil\u2019 Dominic Auricchio was talking to the man upstairs.\n\n\n\n\u201cI had a dream and God came to me,\u201d the now 13-year-old recalled to The Post. \u201cHe told me to be a priest, and then I went into my mom\u2019s bedroom . . . it was the middle of the night . . . and ever since then I\u2019ve wanted to become a priest,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\nThe rising eighth-grader at Holy Trinity School in Westfield, NJ, has kept his commitment to the cloth \u2014 alongside other aspirations.\n\n\n\nDominic Auricchio won the prestigious Cardinal Joseph Tobin Essay & Video Contest, with his entry about his divine encounters and how they inspired him to become a priest. Archdiocese of Newark\n\n\n\n\u201cHe came home one day and said, \u2018I think I\u2019m gonna be the first priest astronaut,'\u201d his mom Maria recalled.\n\n\n\n\u201cIt\u2019s now priest slash Marine. I want to become a Marine first and then join the priesthood,\u201d said Dominic, whose father, Neal, is a Marine\u00a0who served two tours in Iraq and was awarded the Purple Heart.\n\n\n\nDominic began suffering from headaches in December 2022, and an MRI revealed a large mass on his brain.\n\n\n\t\n\n\n\n\u201cHe went on medications and we were debating on what we were going to do. We didn\u2019t want obviously to do surgery if we didn\u2019t have to . . . because of where it was, they would have had to cut into bone,\u201d Maria said.\n\n\n\nMonths later, in May 2023, Dominic said the Virgin Mary appeared in his bedroom to assure him he\u2019d recover.\n\n\n\n\u201cShe was dressed just like we imagine her . . . and she told me that everything would be OK,\u201d said Dominic.\n\n\n\nDominic was in the hospital recovering from his fifth seizure when he heard about the archdiocese\u2019s essay contest. Courtesy of Archdiocese of Newark\n\n\n\nThat June Dominic had a CAT scan, and \u201cthey called me and said, \u2018There\u2019s no reason to move forward with the surgery,\u2019 and now it\u2019s like nothing,\u201d Maria said.\n\n\n\n\u201cNow, when he has an MRI, it appears as just a very small blip.\u201d \n\n\n\nThroughout the harrowing health scare, Dominic remained a devout Catholic and was \u201cpraying non-stop,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\nOn the ride home from school one afternoon after the diagnosis, Maria heard her son talking to God in the backseat.\n\n\n\n\u201cHe\u2019s just going, \u2018I\u2019m just too young to die\u2019 . . . very like matter of fact and calm,\u201d she recalled.\n\n\n\nOne Christmas, Dominic asked for religious objects blessed by Pope Francis.  Archdiocese of Newark\n\n\n\nThe teen serves as an altar boy at St. Helen\u2019s Church and as a buddy to an autistic girl at the parish\u2019s inclusive Masses.\n\n\n\n\u201cThere\u2019s people with disabilities who can\u2019t sit through a regular Mass . . . Everyone\u2019s given a buddy to sit with. I feel closer to God every time I do that,\u201d he said.\n\n\n\nMaria, whose three sons are all altar servers, said the family attends different masses on Sunday, depending on their sports schedules.\n\n\n\n\u201cOr they\u2019ll just miss the sports for it. I\u2019m just honest with the coaches that we have church,\u201d she said.\n\n\n\nDominic Auricchio and his older brother, Vincenzo, serving as altar servers at St. Helen\u2019s in Westwood, NJ. Archdiocese of Newark\n\n\n\nDominic was this year\u2019s winner of the Cardinal Joseph Tobin Essay and Video Contest, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Newark.\n\n\n\nIn the video, he talks about his love for his parents, brothers and hockey like a typical teenager, but then reveals his religious visions \u2014 and calling to the priesthood. \n\n\n\n\u201cPriesthood is a life of service, sacrifice and joy, centered on Jesus,\u201d he says. \u201cI trust that God is guiding me step by step. And I hope to answer his call one day.\u201d\n\n\n\nDominic was awarded a plaque and $1,500 for his award-winning essay and video. Archdiocese of Newark\n\n\n\nHe also talks about the letter he wrote to Pope Francis when he was in fifth grade, asking for blessed items.\n\n\n\n\u201cI received a military Bible, holy water, and a crucifix; they were blessed by The Pope. I was really excited that morning,\u201d he told The Post.\n\n\n\nHis winning video also mentioned how his medical issues, including suffering from seizures, whose causes are still unknown, have given him empathy for others. \n\n\n\n\u201cThese experiences have helped me understand how other people feel when they are scared or hurting. I want to be someone who brings comfort and hope.\u201d\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDominic was actually in the hospital in March, recovering from the fifth seizure he\u2019s had since December, when he heard about the contest, in which 49 seventh graders from the Archdiocese of Newark\u2019s 64 Catholic schools competed.\n\n\n\n\u201cIt was probably my worst seizure because I had to stay in the hospital for six days lying in a bed,\u201d said Dominic, who was awarded a plaque and $1,500 for his award-winning essay and video.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHe said he stays faithful despite his medical issues because he knows \u201cGod is always working in his own ways.\n\n\n\n\u201cEven if something bad happens, it\u2019s part of his plan, so you just have to go with it.\u201d\n\n\n\n."
