Uber Ceases Operations in Nigeria and Uganda

Global ride-hailing company Uber has announced the immediate closure of its operations in Nigeria and Uganda after reviewing its business in the two markets. Uber began operating in Nigeria in 2014 and Uganda two years later. It has faced increasingly difficult conditions, including rising fuel costs, pressure from rival ride-hailing platforms and complaints from drivers over low fares and high commission charges.

The company's departure from Nigeria and Uganda follows its recent exits from Ivory Coast and Tanzania, further reducing its presence on the continent. Uber said the decision was limited to the two countries and would not affect its remaining operations in sub-Saharan Africa, where it says it continues to see growth opportunities.

The company will support affected employees and drivers. Its help centres in Nigeria and Uganda will remain open until later this month to address outstanding issues. Other ride-hailing companies, including Bolt, inDrive and local operators, are expected to compete for customers and fill the gap left by Uber's departure.
