OXFORD, Miss. (WMC) - Oxford police say a minor faces charges after posting an overnight threat against Oxford Middle School. Police confirmed this was tied to the viral trend of kids using an AI-generated depiction of Mike Myers’ Cat in the Hat to threaten schools and students.
Law enforcement agencies across the country have been on high alert regarding AI-generated videos of the character threatening to target real kids by name.
OPD confirmed that the threat against Oxford Middle was tied to the trend but did not provide further details about what was posted online.
Police added that there was never any real threat against the school or students.
Oxford Police Chief Jeff McCutchen says it doesn’t matter if it’s called a prank or a trend—making a threat is a serious crime.
The unidentified minor behind the threat is charged with making terroristic threats.
