                    "President Donald Trump literally jumped the gun Friday by encouraging American ranchers to go ahead and shoot gray wolves to protect their cattle herds from the predators.\nTrump signed an executive order in the Oval Office Friday with a provision to \u201cencourage\u201d states to delist gray wolves as protected species so ranchers can shoot them.\n\u201cGray wolves have been listed under federal endangered species protection in parts of the United States for over 50 years,\u201d according to the Endangered Species Act.\n\u201cAnybody have a problem with the Mexican gray wolf?\u201d Trump asked the ranchers surrounding the Resolute Desk.\nOne rancher said the Clinton administration released gray wolves in Arizona and New Mexico, which have become \u201ca big problem.\u201d\n\u201cNot a great idea, right?\u201d Trump asked. \u201cAlthough they are beautiful looking. But you don\u2019t think they are beautiful, do you? And what do they do, rip the herd apart?\u201d\n\u201cThey will kill your livestock, they will kill your dogs, your horses,\u201d the rancher said.\nAgriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said, \u201cBut sir, the problem is, because they are on the endangered species list, they can\u2019t shoot them. They have to sit and watch them destroy the herd.\u201d\n\u201cYou can shoot them as of today,\u201d Trump declared.\n\u201cWell, Secretary [Doug] Burgum has to do a little magic, but yes,\u201d Rollins laughed.\n\u201cHow do you like the idea that I\u2019m letting you do that?\u201d Trump asked another rancher. \u201cAnd that will totally solve the problem, right?\u201d\nThe rancher, from Washington state, reluctantly agreed.\n\u201cBut you\u2019ll be able to protect your herd. And right now you can\u2019t do anything,\u201d Trump said. \u201cIt\u2019s illegal, right?\u201d\n\u201cWe\u2019ve seen it take hundreds of family ranches, and it\u2019s just gone,\u201d the man said.\n\u201cAnd they would be able to protect if they had the right to shoot them?\u201d Trump asked.\nThe rancher explained, \u201cThe state of Washington has fought us tooth and nail. Won\u2019t allow your team to come in, won\u2019t allow us to do anything.\u201d\n\u201cOkay, you\u2019re allowed to go and take care,\u201d Trump said, but the rancher shook his head no.\n\u201cNo, no,\u201d Trump said. \u201cYou\u2019re allowed to.
