                    "President Donald Trump did not dispute that he is building monuments to himself amid his architectural blitz in Washington, DC, saying in a recent interview that \u201cnobody will do it once I\u2019m gone.\u201d\n    \n\n    \n            When asked about the monuments, such as the \u201ctriumphal arch,\u201d by New York Magazine, Trump agreed that he was building them for himself.\n    \n\n    \n            \u201cThat\u2019s true,\u201d Trump said. \u201cNobody will do it once I\u2019m gone. When I leave here, nobody will.\u201d\n    \n\n    \n            The president has been intensely focused on construction of a White House ballroom and other projects in his second term, much to the chagrin of some congressional Republicans and Trump advisers, some of whom told New York Magazine that harping on the ballroom could harm the GOP\u2019s midterm election chances and make staying on message more difficult.\n    \n\n    \n            Trump told the magazine, however, that \u201cthe people should be thankful\u201d for the ballroom.\n    \n\n    \n            \u201cA lot of people said, \u2018Don\u2019t do this interview.\u2019 But I\u2019m proud of the work I\u2019m doing,\u201d the president said.\n    \n\n    \n            Trump has argued that the ballroom is necessary for national security, emphasizing plans for a drone port on the roof and an underground bunker, as well as bulletproof windows. Meanwhile, the administration is set to break ground on the 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery in the next two weeks.\n    \n\n    \n            But ultimately, as sources told CNN earlier this year, it all comes down to the president\u2019s legacy.\n    \n\n    \n            \u201cLook at Donald Trump\u2019s life, look at what he\u2019s done: Built things that no one will ever tear down,\u201d a source close to him told CNN in May, noting that even if successors undo his policies, the ballroom will likely still stand.\n    \n\n    \n            \u201cThe one thing they can\u2019t tear down will be the East Wing. That is his lasting impact. That\u2019s why he cares so deeply: legacy sh*t,\u201d the source said."
