SALTILLO, Miss. (WTVA) – Meals on Wheels is looking for volunteers to help expand their services.
Meals on Wheels is looking for more volunteers to deliver meals as the organization tries to expand its service area into Saltillo.
The program already serves seniors in Tupelo. Organizers say the need exists in Saltillo, but they cannot add delivery routes there without more volunteers.
“We just do not have enough volunteers to create those 2 additional routes,” said Tammy Martin, director of Meals on Wheels.
Martin described some of the people in the Saltillo area who would receive meals if the program expands.
“In the Saltillo area, there is a couple. Both are on hospice,” Martin said. “The wife is on oxygen, so it’s harder for her to stand and cook. We have sisters. One is 95, and one is 89. The 89-year-old sister just got out of the hospital. Those are the type of people we are looking to provide services for.”
Volunteers who deliver meals also provide a wellness check and a conversation with the people they visit.
“Oftentimes, we’re the first and only person they may see all day long from that volunteer,” Martin said.
Meals on Wheels said it needs a few people willing to take on a small part of the delivery work rather than one person solving the entire problem.
Those interested in volunteering can call (662) 844-1441.
