Many, including Clinton, mock Trump's coif.\n Drexler: Women's appearance gets more attention. But scrutiny of appearance is a part of life -- for men, too. It's our fault for joining in.\n \n\n\n\n \n This week, the election season took a turn for the predictable as Hillary Clinton\u2019s hair became the topic of conversation in a Donald Trump media appearance. \n \n\n\n \n \n\n \n Trump was chatting with Mark Levin, a conservative talk radio host who wanted to know what Trump suspected voters liked most about Clinton. Trump\u2019s response was characteristically provocative, if entirely off-point: \u201cWell, she has a new hairdo,\u201d Trump replied. \u201cDid you notice that today?\u201d\n \n\n \n That wasn\u2019t all. He then went on to call Clinton\u2019s hair \u201cshocking,\u201d \u201cmassive\u201d and agreeing with Levin\u2019s suggestion that the pile of hair atop his opponent\u2019s head \u201cmust be\u201d a wig. \n \n\n \n Politics as usual, right? \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Men and their hair\n \n\n \n What a woman looks like \u2013 her weight, her clothes, how much makeup she does or doesn\u2019t wear \u2013has remained stubbornly front and center in the world of working women, and especially those in, or aiming for, public office. Despite being one of history\u2019s most successful female political figures, Clinton has been judged for decades on how she looks: for those pantsuits, for her choice of hair accessories, for her weight, you name it. \n \n\n \n Throughout, many have argued that such comments are directed at Clinton, and her female cohorts, simply because they\u2019re women; that no male candidate would be subjected to such constant analysis of hair, skin, wardrobe, weight. And, in the wake of Trump\u2019s comments last night, it would be easy to say that things haven\u2019t really changed; that even when talking about one of the world\u2019s most powerful women, matters still come down to how good we think she looks. \n \n\n \n Except it\u2019s not entirely true that women are on the receiving end of all the focus on appearance.\n \n\n \n Hillary Clinton, for example, made fun of Trump\u2019s hair in a bit on Jimmy Fallon (\u201cjust one strand that he twirls over his head like a soft serve at Dairy Queen\u201d) And let\u2019s not forget all the girl talk about Mitt Romney\u2019s good looks or judgment of his expensive haircut as a signal of \u201cwealthy privilege.\u201d Meanwhile, President Barack Obama\u2019s personal style continues to garner praise \u2013 that is, when he\u2019s not taking heat over his \u201cmom jeans.\u201d \n \n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n In pictures: Hillary Clinton\n \n\n \n Donald Trump, we well know by now, has no filter. He says what he thinks, seemingly as soon as he thinks it, and it\u2019s not always appetizing. That\u2019s why people love him, and also why people don\u2019t. It\u2019s certainly why he\u2019s still generating headline news. \n \n\n \n And yet, in his conversation with the Levin \u2013 which, given that Levin is a well-known conservative, had an agenda from the get-go \u2013 Trump doesn\u2019t actually say anything negative or positive about Clinton\u2019s hair. He brings it up out of context, sure. But he never actually says it doesn\u2019t look good. \n \n\n \n But so what if he did? The truth is that appearance is part of life, and a pretty big one. \n \n\n \n In politics, it may not be something to celebrate, necessarily \u2013 certainly not a legitimate reason to elect or not elect someone to office \u2013 but it needn\u2019t be something to entirely ignore, either. That\u2019s not evolution; that\u2019s just forced silence, which is quite possibly as damning, and as damaging, as making appearance the only thing that matters. \n \n\n \n In fact, let\u2019s consider that the greatest amount of attention put on Clinton\u2019s new hairstyle wasn\u2019t Trump\u2019s doing; it was the doing of everyone else who took his comments and ran with them, turning a blowhard\u2019s observation into something resembling an attack. \n \n\n \n Clinton may very well be wearing a wig. It seems unlikely, but who cares? Many women do. So do many men.\n \n\n \n Does Trump? Well, the world continues to marvel at his odd locks. Perhaps enduring many years of public taunting about them has encouraged him to do the same to others or at least sent him the message that the topic isn\u2019t off-limits. That, after all, is how bullies become bullies \u2013 they\u2019ve been subject to the teasing themselves.\n \n\n \n Let\u2019s make sure that from now on, if anyone\u2019s going to do the bullying, it\u2019s Trump.
