Education: Partnership aims to buy bikes for Sudduth Elementary

  • 1 min to read

STARKVILLE – Bikes in the Schools, a partnership between Mississippi State University’s Physical Education and Coaching program and Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District, helps students build the skills and confidence needed to ride a bike.

The program is striving to ensure every Kindergarten and first-grade student at Sudduth Elementary – roughly 900 students – learns to ride a bicycle safely through their physical education class.

The organization is currently raising funds through bulldogboost.com/campaigns/bike-in-the-schools to purchase a classroom set of bikes.

Students in the MSU program will gain experience teaching students how to ride the bikes as well as assist physical education teachers with set-up, helmet fittings and safety checks to make prior to riding.

“Biking is empowering and provides an active way to get around, opportunities to connect and socialize with others, and significant physical and mental health benefits,” the Bikes in the Schools funding page reads. “Bike in the Schools will be part of Sudduth Elementary’s plan to enhance physical activity before, during and after school. The program aligns with the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District goals of student achievement, health wellness and school culture, human resources, and community collaboration.”
