Personnel operating under the Mediterranean naval initiative Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI boarded the MV SUN on Sunday for “flag verification,” Kallas wrote in a post on X. “This is the sixth suspected shadow fleet vessel boarded by our EU operations in recent months,” she said, referring to vessels with opaque ownership used to bypass Western sanctions against Russia. She said EU defense ministers plan to discuss “actions against the shadow fleet” at their meeting in Ireland on Tuesday. opinion (https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2026/09/01/kyivs-allies-must-flex-their-military-muscles-against-russias-shadow-fleet) (Kyiv’s Allies Must Flex Their Military Muscles Against Russia’s Shadow Fleet) Kyiv’s Allies Must Flex Their Military Muscles Against Russia’s Shadow Fleet Read more In July, the EU (https://ru.themoscowtimes.com/2026/07/25/es-razreshil-konfiskovivat-i-prodavat-neft-s-narushayuschih-sanktsii-protiv-rossii-tankerov-a201829) adopted a mechanism allowing member states to confiscate and sell Russian oil carried aboard shadow fleet vessels attempting to evade the bloc’s sanctions. President Vladimir Putin this month (https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2026/08/12/putin-threatens-retaliation-if-europe-seizes-russian-ships-a93470) vowed to retaliate in kind if European countries carried out plans to seize Russian commercial vessels. Putin, who previously said the Russian Defense Ministry had received instructions to prepare a response, has slammed previous interceptions of Russia-linked vessels as “piracy.” EUNAVFOR MED Irini is an EU naval mission first launched in 2020 to enforce a UN arms embargo on Libya. EU governments have since broadened its scope, authorizing it to conduct verification boardings. The EU has (https://ec.europa.eu/commission/presscorner/detail/en/ip_25_3070) sanctioned around 600 ships suspected of being part of Russia’s “shadow fleet” network. Russia's Prosecutor General's Office has designated The Moscow Times as an "undesirable" organization, criminalizing our work and putting our staff at risk of prosecution. This follows our earlier unjust labeling as a "foreign agent." These actions are direct attempts to silence independent journalism in Russia. The authorities claim our work "discredits the decisions of the Russian leadership." We see things differently: we strive to provide accurate, unbiased reporting on Russia. We, the journalists of The Moscow Times, refuse to be silenced.
