[Shady Alassar - Anadolu Agency]) Commercial vessels and oil tankers preparing to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical strategic waterways for global trade flows, maintain their wait in the Gulf of Oman, on June 17, 2026. [Shady Alassar – Anadolu Agency] A tanker was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire that was subsequently extinguished, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). UKMTO said local authorities reported that the incident occurred on 25 th August. All crew members were reported safe, while authorities were investigating the circumstances of the incident and the origin of the projectile. The maritime security agency advised vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz to exercise caution and report any suspicious activity, citing a heightened threat environment in the region. Shipping through the waterway has fallen sharply amid the regional conflict and heightened security risks. Reports indicate that daily vessel traffic has declined by as much as 95 percent compared with pre-war levels. Washington, meanwhile, has said that US sanctions and restrictions against Iran remain in force amid continuing tensions with Tehran.
