NETTLETON, Miss. (WTVA) – An old home could be the next place for the community to gather for events.
The City of Nettleton is looking to renovate a home on Maple Street that was built in the 1800s.
It would be called the Cotton House.
It was gifted to the city by Betty Williams. The home was used as a hotel during the city’s railroad days.
Nettleton Main Street Co-Director Dana Burcham said the city applied for a $500,000 grant through the Mississippi Main Street Revitalization Fund.
The city is also working on getting the home registered as a historic home.
Nettleton resident Nikki Davis said she hopes the history of the home attracts visitors to Nettleton and helps generate revenue.
Davis said she is looking forward to seeing the finished product.
“I think we’re really excited about it,” Davis said. “We’re hoping to be able to do events, maybe baby showers, wedding showers. There’s not a whole lot of locations in Nettleton to have a bunch of events, so I’m hoping this kind of opens a lot of doors that we have not had recently.”
Burcham said the city will benefit from the renovation, but the community will be greatly affected.
“The city will receive revenue off of this with the rental fees,” Burcham said. “Right now, people are going to other towns just to have community events. This will bring the community together and have everything here in Nettleton.”
Burcham said if the city is awarded the funds, it will take about a year to renovate the home back to its original character.
