BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WTVA) – A Prentiss County man is aiming to take a bite out of school lunch debt.

Nearly a week ago, Garrett Reece put out the call for donations to ensure kids can learn without worrying in the lunch line.

He set a goal to raise $2,000 to distribute among the county’s schools equally: Marietta, Hills Chapel, Jumpertown, Wheeler, Thrasher, and New Site.

Donations toward lunch debt have been something he has helped with before.

“Last year, we tried to do Thrasher. Theirs was already paid off when I reached out last year. We helped Hills Chapel, and I think Wheeler last year,” Reece said. “I feel like food at school is something that we could all come together and make sure every kid that goes to class can eat something.”

He said in the past, the debt at a school can vary. With the school year still fresh, what the tab at the schools is uncertain.

Which is why he aimed for the $2,000.

“That would give $333 to each school,” Reece said. “I would like to think we could do so much more than that. If we could get a couple thousand locals to pitch in a few bucks, I mean, that’s $10,000. I’m looking at this as a bigger picture, not necessarily just this year, but this year and every year after this year. I don’t want this to be a conversation.”

He said at 46 cents a meal, a lot of children can be fed.

He said people can go straight to their school of choice to donate.

They can also reach out to him on Facebook, or they can call him at (662) 720-6311 to learn more about how to donate.

More than $1,200 has been collected as of Wednesday.
